Your jewelry will undoubtedly go through a lot throughout its life. Between regular wear and tear, being exposed to chemicals like sunscreen and perfume, and even occasionally being dropped on the floor or another hard surface, your pieces deserve some TLC every once in a while.
That’s where at-home jewelry care comes in!
By maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of your favorite accessories, you ensure that you’ll be wearing them for years and years to come. And if you’re not sure how or how often to take up this practice? Don’t worry -- the experts at Jewelry Design Center have you covered.
Your Guide to Maintaining and Cleaning Your Jewelry
In its simplest form, at-home jewelry maintenance requires only three things: lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and a washcloth.
Take a bowl of your lukewarm water and add a few drops of soap or jewelry cleaning solution. After dampening your washcloth with the soap solution, wipe down every surface of your jewelry pieces with the cloth and rinse them again in a bowl of clean water. Dry each piece with a new washcloth, and set them aside on a paper towel to air dry.
Although this process can vary slightly depending on the type of jewelry you own, these steps are a tried-and-true method for maintaining your jewelry pieces at home.
Now, how often your jewelry should be cleaned will depend on how often they’re worn. An engagement ring or wedding band that’s worn every day, for example, will require much more frequent cleanings than, say, a statement necklace you wear once or twice a year.
Expect to clean your everyday pieces two or three times a month, and less often for the rest of your jewelry. As a general rule of thumb, each item should be cleaned at least once a year to get rid of any dirt or chemical buildup that may have accumulated over the months.
Additional Tips to Keep in Mind
- How you store your jewelry is just as important as how you clean them! Avoid tossing them all into a ring dish or on top of your dresser, as that may cause scratches and dents on the softer materials. A jewelry box would be ideal for this purpose, but storing them in individual boxes or pouches would work in a punch.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to light, heat, and chemicals. Put on your jewelry last when getting ready and take it off immediately when you get home to lessen the amount of time your pieces stay in contact with your sweat, perfume, makeup, and skincare products.
